The Power of Mudras

How this ancient gesture enhances modern wellness

What are mudras and why do we practice them?

Movements and gestures have been used historically throughout time as a way to express how we feel. Mudras, in our yoga practice, are an extension of this very same concept. Mudras are often considered the yoga of our hands, and since our hands are a direct extension of our hearts, maybe we could consider these the yoga of the heart <3. In yoga, we use various mudras to encapsulate a particular energy or feeling. Take a moment now to take your right hand over your heart and your left hand atop your right. Close your eyes. And feel. After several moments, open your eyes and take a moment to consider how it felt when your hands were holding your own heart. In the simplest way, this is exactly what mudras do. It is a way to consciously direct energy in a particular way to evoke a particular feeling. The next time you need a boost of confidence, try practicing Jaya or Vira mudra. Need to tap into the conscious energy of the divine collective? Try practicing Anjali or Jnana mudra.

In short, incorporating mudras into your yoga or meditation practice is a beautiful way to connect to, to transmit and to receive the truth of the heart.
